Bath stone has long been renowned worldwide for it's excellent building properties, and for some considerable time the quarrying of this stone was a large and vital industry for the city of Bath. Box Freestone Quarry is one such operation. It runs for approximately 30 miles, giving a good indication of the scale of these quarries. After mining operations finished, many of the areas in Bath were converted for use by the military during the Second World War.
