BURHAM TUNNEL

Little information about this tunnel is available, for example when it was built or when it was shut but it is known the tunnel was dug to access a large chalk pit dug into the hillside below Bluebell Hill. The tunnel is approximately 550 yards long and is in a good condition apart from the chalk finding its way back into the tunnel via the air shafts.  Access was via the southern portal, and about halfway along the tunnel we came to a wall of chalk. Just to the right you can crawl through it, then comes the next obstacle which is a 10 feet wall. There are two ways through this, either over or under the wall. Once past the wall you can easily walk to the other end.
