Garrison Point Fort Lower Level, sheerness

After the Dutch launched a surprise attack in 1667 into Medway, it was quite clear that the defences around the Medway area were in need of huge improvements. However, it wasn't until 1860 that a serious report was put together by the Royal Commission, which suggested that a new fortification should be constructed on the site of earlier batteries. This would contain substantially more guns, and by 1869 Garrison Point Fort was constructed and contained 36 RML (rifle muzzle loaded) guns.

In 1885 three Brennan torpedo launching systems were added to the fort. More upgrading was done to the fort during the Second World War and Garrison Point remained in use until 1956, when the Coastal Artillery was finally disbanded. The fort is now owned by Medway Ports Authority and is not open to the public. Over the last few years a lot of conservation work has been undertaken between Medway Ports Authority and English Heritage.
