Grain Tower Battery
Isle Of Grain Area

I've put Grain Tower in the Miscellaneous section, as it was built after the Napoleonic era, but before the advent of the First World War, and also saw use in the Second World War.

Grain Tower was built in 1855 and was based loosely on the Martello Tower design of the earlier Napoleonic period. It was fortified with the addition of an upper level in 1912 to house two 4.7inch quick-firing guns. The tower then became an anti-torpedo and anti-submarine battery for the First World War. In 1940 the Tower had a further refit to accommodate a twin 6pdr quick-firing gun. 29 men were posted here during that time. The tower was finally disarmed and put out of commission in 1946.
