Langdon Battery, overlooking the
Eastern Arm of Dover Harbour, was built at the start of the 20th
century to be the most powerful of the gun batteries protecting the
harbour. The original design called for 3 x 10" and 2 x 6" guns, but
the 10" guns were dropped in favour of the newer 9.2" with a much
greater range. However needs change, and one of the 9.2" positions was
modified to take another 6" gun, and by 1939 these 6" weapons in 3
positions were what the gunners went to war with. Today the battery is
used by the Coastguard as the MRCC / CNIS base. Underground sections
have all been utilised today as storage, plant rooms and emergency
escape from the site.
