South Lines Casemates were largely
destroyed during the demolition of South Front Barracks and the
subsequent occupation of the remaining site by a freight company. Vast
quantities of rubbish have been dumped into the ditch making the whole
area slightly unsavoury. Access to the casemates was via South Front
Barracks itself, or from the higher ground using a shaft with spiral
staircase that appears to have been destroyed.
