THE SUNKEN COURTYARD, FORT AMHERST

Further round the dry ditch is the Sunken Courtyard. It is much more spacious than it first appears, and with the amount of ventilation holes in each room, it was likely that larger guns as well as muskets would have been in use here. The vents were necessary to stop the build up of smoke from firing cannons and muskets.
