Radar was developed during the 1930’s as a way of warning against approaching enemy aircraft. A network of radar stations was built around the country to provide a defensive system covering all possible approaches, and this network is known as Chain Home stations.
Ventnor Chain Home Radar Station was started in 1937 and while construction on the main station continued, a temporary station with other experimental equipment gave immediate cover and was on full war alert by August 1939. The main station continued and in 1939 three 365ft tall transmitter towers were built and four receiver towers.
In 1940 Ventnor Chain Home Station was bombed by the Luftwaffe and severely damaged, rendering it inoperable. While it was out of action a temporary system was set up at Bembridge until Ventnor was ready to go back into operation. This attack, which had also damaged other Chain Home stations resulted in the development of reserve facilities. Ventnor had buried reserves on site, although these were not ready until well into 1942.
